Skegemog Primer - Dunham Lake

In preparation for the mighty Mother Cup in two weeks, I met up with the Gustafson/Gardner group on a beautiful Sunday morning on Dunham Lake. I am happy to report my boat has yet to get skunked (yes, it has only been two outings but a streak has to start somewhere). I pulled in a skinny pike and a couple of green fish, one with a little girth. Terry G., however, was showing the youngsters how to fish as everytime I looked over, he had a fish flopping on the water. There was a nice turtle festival going on over on the west side of the lake (click on picture below).

Way Back Machine

It was alumni night as old school riders Gordie and Rob made an appearance at Island Lake. They didn't ride but that is not what the bike tour is about. It's about friends getting together and talking about silly things. We had a new rider on the circuit tonight, Eric's bro-in-law Lee, who was tearing up the trails like I have never seen before (Lee, you owe me $10 for that statement). It was a record turnout (I'm including tailgaters) tonight for the tour as the previous record of five on August 28, 2008 was edged out by the six tonight. Can we get seven? Good brats there E.

Maiden Voyage

A new toy was added to the Tim collection this past week. While I still have a ways to go to match the Tim V. and Steve G. toy totals, it still is fun to get a new toy. The kayak is a Native Watercraft (made in NC) product. So I took her out to the "mighty" Huron River (look at the mighty current in the picture!) Saturday morning and had a grand old time floating down the river. I caught about 10 rock bass, nothing much on size but fun just the same. All was well until I realized I had a ways to paddle up the river back to the car. Leisure time turned into a bit of a workout there, even with the light current. A lesson learned I guess and will be sure to flip flop the process next time.
Three more weeks until the Mother Cup!

Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! A fine ride it was tonight at Brighton Recreation Area. The skeeters, however, were in mid season form and it's still May!

With the Memorial Day theme, I am glad to be mountain biking in Michigan as opposed to say the riding environment in Afghanistan? Those land mines would be worse than any stump I have tripped over in my tenure. So thanks to those who are fighting that allow me to mountain bike in peace.

Lastly, we have Mark showing the anniversary shirt for the tour (the catalog is coming in the near future).

Good Kite Flying Weather (until the wind stopped)

A beautiful evening it was at Island Lake. The trails had a few puddles but all was well out there as the trees are peaking with the bloom right now. The wind was kicking all day so it was good kite flying weather and its been awhile since my last kite experience. My last memory is my brother flying a Jolly Green Giant kite that was huge and we had the whole Farmington neighborhood involved in gathering string to keep this kite going further in the distance. I honestly can't recall how we got the kite down but that thing was up there! With that, we pulled out the Batman kite tonight, got her all stringed up, and....there was no wind. I ran around the parking lot to generate the wind but the minute I stopped, Batman nose dived into the pavement. Batman will fly another day I'm sure.

Kudos to the Wings! No more west coast games. Yay!!!

Robar/Reeves Blood

I looted the attached picture of my nephew Jackson from my sister. It appears he has the Robar gift of art as this definitely is not a Reeves' trait (my self portrait is below).

I did see a little Reeves in him though when I visited the Robar clan in Sao Paulo in March. I went to see Jackson's ball game and he was playing centerfield. He had the Reeves' patented corn cob up the butt walk/run going.

Highland Rec

It was great to see my fellow Molson Bike Tour posse out there tonight at Highland Recreation Area. The rain moved out just in time for a nice May evening ride. Jim joined us for the post ride festivities and we were greeted by a horse riding duo that had some beautiful quarter horses. Okay, I know absolutely nothing about quarter horses but Jim said they were good horses and I am taking his word for it. They were some muscular horses though. Next Thursday, unless too many t-ball games are taking place, will be the Molson Bike Tour 10 year anniversary party at Island Lake. I don't care if you ride a bicycle or not, come on out for the celebration. Good Johnsonville brats!!!

5/11/09 - UPDATE - While the anniversary party is being moved to a later date, we will still be grilling at Island Lake on Thursday. Come on out.
