Alumni Basketball - Lone Redskin

While my mission playing in the alumni basketball game today at MHS was to not land in the hospital (mission accomplished), I didn't realize I would be the lone Redskin of the bunch. A little background is needed for that statement. Playing time at the alumni game is assigned based on graduate year; oldest goes first. Kind of like the Masters golf tournament when Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead would trot out there first and the youngsters would say, "who is that?" Well, today I was the one trotting out first as nobody was older than the class of '85. Heck, most of my teammates today weren't even born when I was getting chewed out by Coach Palmer back in the day.
Then it hit me. Milford changed their name from Redskins to Mavericks in the early 2000's. I was a lone Redskin in a sea of Mavericks. Bummer for them.
A fun time it was though. The alumni side even threw down a few dunks. I didn't score but thankfully my shots hit iron at least.

Church of Tim - Festivus Miracle!

A festivus miracle it was today as my nephew Jackson and I pedaled Island Lake. I would call it about 3/4 ride-able trail and about 1/4 slop but its December so no complaints. A gold star to Jackson and his fat ass tires for respecting his elders and waiting for Uncle Tim to eventually catch up on the loops.

Chippewa Tribal Celebration

The former tenants of Merrill, Carey, Wheeler, University, Main, Western Islands, Chippewa Village, Huntington, The Blue House (address unknown), and various other locations and closets throughout Mt. Pleasant converged upon the Crouse chalet last night to celebrate another year of life and all the wackiness that accompanies it. A shout out to Slick for capturing the group photo below...on one take! Nobody has their eyes closed or are scratching a booger; amazing. I'm glad ESPN could also photo bomb in on the action.
Happy Holidays to all!

Way Back Machine - 1967 - Birth

The way back machine today takes us way back to 1967 as on this day 47 years ago at Mt. Carmel Hospital in the D, a big headed baby squeezed his large melon out of his mom's womb and said hello to the world; then started crying like nobody has ever cried before. Yes, I cried with the best of them. One of my first memories of said crying was when I walked in front of my brother practicing his batting swing in the back yard. Little Timmy's eye made direct contact with one of the swings, blood gushed similar to a Monty Python skit and 47 years later, the stitch scar still remains (noted below).
What a year it was to be born as out west people were getting frisky with whomever was near them in the summer of love while my birth town was rioting. My favorite riot story (yes, the riots sucked) involves my dad. And no, he wasn't looting on Clairmount Street. He was doing some painting at our home in Farmington. What does every man need when doing a home project? A cold beer to enjoy. Well, with the riots, all of the metropolitan Detroit liquor stores were not selling. In the car my dad went and an hour later, he arrived in Toledo, got his beer, drove back home and completed his project. Nice perseverance there.
Happy 47th birthday also to Pedro Borbon (looked it up).

Moon Over White Lake

Yep, the moon was out in White Lake as I did a double take the first time driving by this creation yesterday. If there was a contest for best pumpkin, this one would have to take it.

Way Back Machine - The Mullet Year - What the *@#$! was I thinking?

The year was 1988 and young Tim was, well, young Tim thought he knew everything there was to know about the world. Young Tim didn't know shit. Long hair in the back? Yeah, it will look great and the ladies will love it! That was the mindset in my pea size brain that still wasn't fully developed (still waiting for that). The only thing missing was an extra large comb in my back pocket with an Ozzy logo on it. Thankfully I didn't take it that far. When I transferred to State that fall, they put me on a floor in the dorms with mostly freshmen; I was a junior. With the hair, the youngsters one night were calling me the Antichrist. Shame on them for following the Antichrist as the only thing I led them to was community college once their parents saw their report cards over winter break. Needless to say, the mullet didn't last long as my friends will attest that my hair can produce oil faster than any human being out there. Combine that with the excess hair and by three in the afternoon, I could have replaced the oil in my car. Add in some neck pains from constantly flipping the hair back and by late spring of 1989, the mullet said goodbye for good. Looking back on some things in our lives, some we can say, "yeah, that was worth it."
It wasn't worth it. A royal pain in the ass trying to maintain it. I don't know how (or why) others do it.

Doe, A Deer, A Mountain Bike Deer...

The "on your left" call out wasn't needed as I pedaled on the Milford Trail yesterday; the four-legged furry riders crossing my path had me on the speed factor and there was no way I was catching them. I turn the corner on the trail and bam, there they were. A pack of four deer having a hang out party, probably discussing survival techniques and safe areas as bow season is on and they know it. All was well with their gathering until my mug made an appearance and off they went.

Way Back Machine - '73 - Griswold Family Vacation

Old Tucson
The way back machine takes us to 1973 today for the Reeves' version of "the Griswold vacation." Three kids with attitudes and two parents telling themselves "never again" after the week was up (joking, we did in fact do it again later in the decade) heading west to visit my grandparents in Tucson, Arizona. We didn't see the biggest ball of string but did see "Old Tucson" for some gunfight re-creations, the Grand Canyon and the grandaddy of them all, a trip to the Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse. The place is famous for cutting the neckties off of customers and pinning them to the wall. I looked it up and they are still cutting ties off today. The outstanding leisure-wear you see below was just before our trip there. The GQ of the 70's...not.

Last Float For Summer Calendar

nightcrawler harness - 17"
I'm not sure if it was the warm front coming through or the southwest winds stirring it all up but the lake of a thousand casts, Dunham, served up some nice keepers Saturday morning for Doke and I on the last official weekend of summer. For all the 10 to 13 3/4 inchers that this lake normally produces, I'm not even going to question it as doing so is doing the impossible. The lake should be re-named Lake Anomaly.
The lure of choice for me was a mix of a nightcrawler harness to troll with and a pink wacky to throw. Both did quite well with the pink grabbing a monster that I "horsed" near the boat and lost. Wa wa.... There is your fish story for today. Doke, meanwhile, went with the crankbait angle the entire time; one lure, and would have had quite a bag to present had we been keeping the fish.
Thanks go out to Al for the portage.

Nine Live Radio

In a postscript to the Chip float last weekend, the radio did indeed survive the drink in the river I am happy to report! This radio, which I've had for probably 25 years, is the Rambo/Jason of Friday the 13th/Freddie Krueger of radios; it will not die! It has also taken a drink ice fishing, been dropped, thrown, dropped again, and survived that as well. And yes, that is a file for the antenna. Are you going to get crystal clear digital tuning with Bose surround sound? Yeah.....no. One speaker and a wobbly tuning button will get you where you need to go, however. Keep on keeping SoundDesign!

Chip Floatin'

The mountain town called four former Chippewas this weekend for the annual Chippewa River float. We've been doing this for about a decade now and I was wondering on the drive up why the canoe rental owner doesn't recognize us by now. Well, the first words out of his mouth as we approached the rental office were "I remember you" so I guess our mark has been left. We even striked a pose for his Facebook page (noted below; yes cheesy).  The river did not disappoint as Al and Doke probably brought in 40-50 per angler under optimal weather conditions. I got my quota (one). Besides my radio taking a drink in the river, which I'm confident will live another day, no casualties to report.
Good time; good people.

Pacific Northwest Pedal

The bike tour hit the Pacific Northwest this past week in search of...more biking! And to see what is exactly out there in the top left corner of our great country; and both were everything I expected and more. Along with me on the trip was Ms. Vicki who needed a break from getting her tonsils out earlier this summer which isn't exactly the "yay, we get to each lots of ice cream!!" experience everyone portrays it to be. From what I've heard, it's quite painful for quite some time and even more painful post-kiddy age.
We arrived late Sunday and settled in with a...you guessed it, beer, at a local establishment called the The 5 Point Cafe (pictured at bottom). Think of it as the Gusoline Alley of Seattle as it had some history, some character and a great jukebox. As a bonus, the menu had a choice of chicken fried bacon. Was I in heaven? I have a shot of it below and tried it the following day, however, it looked better on paper as you just can't get the bacon crisp enough. The Manny's Pale Ale (local product) washing it down was quite delicious so all was well.
The following morning we put on our tourist hats and hit the Pike Place Market. Think of Eastern Market with a huge ass lake behind it. This video http://youtu.be/L-LiLzCM4nU  is the guys throwing the fish and yucking it up. We even got to add to the famed "gum wall" at the market. It's an alley that has millions of pieces of ABC (already been chewed) gum. Cool scene.
We then got on the bicycles and hit the loop around Puget Sound, up over the Ballard Locks, along the water up to Golden Gardens Park which looks off to the Olympic Mountains, down through the neighborhoods of Ballard and Fremont (cool area), stopped at Gas Works Park which looks off onto the city from the other side ("Sleepless in Seattle" houseboat near there), over to the University of Washington and back downtown after the University Bridge. The guys at the bike shop said it comes out to about 15-20 miles total on the loop with surprisingly little hills. They gave us a good map and the trail was well marked. It was a mix of park-like to industrial to bar crawl areas on the path. Vicki gets the trooper award as a curb unfortunately grabbed her tire and took her down. Let's just say she left a piece of herself in Seattle. She pedaled on though; and soon purchased some Neosporin. Bike falls aside, two bloody thumbs up on the bike angle.
Tuesday we went back into tourist mode and hit the aquarium which was quite impressive; even with the screaming kids... One of the otters (seals?) did a dance for the cameras in the video here http://youtu.be/wkX3etXAsYE.
For lunch we took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island; about a 35 minute ride. The ferry was only $8 round trip and had some great views. Doc's Marina Grill on the island served it's purpose in filling my belly with good food and cold beverages.
Wednesday we hit a spy exhibit at the Pacific Science Center near the Space Needle. The exhibit was everything spies, from the creation of the intelligence agencies and all their gadgets to profiles of some of the best. Some incredible artifacts. It was like a "Get Smart" exhibit.
We couldn't (well, we could have) leave Seattle without going on the duck tour (http://youtu.be/glzrcMdMBhc); part land, part sea, all in one vehicle!!! It had all the elements of cheesy and quite a few screaming kids to boot but all in all, I had a great time on it.
Another must see was the Hard Rock Cafe and the pictures on display from the city's vast music history did not disappoint.
We concluded the trip Wednesday afternoon with an elevator ride to the top of the Space Needle (http://youtu.be/IfCs5j0InxQ). Mt. Rainier was visible in the distance. That is one large mass.
While walking back to the hotel, we came upon this skateboard park near Key Arena (http://youtu.be/OheaZd6Cy9k).  I was going to ask to try but wisely just spectated.
For all I hear about how its always raining in Seattle (and I did pack my umbrella), we got lucky I guess. Sun every day. I'm sure we missed seeing something but we covered quite a lot of territory via foot, bike and boat.
Great city.
