The large melon ventured to the mountains this past week to Utah, specifically Salt Lake City. My last Utah experience was a very brief one in the mid 1970's as the Reeves did the Griswold family road trip from Michigan to Arizona and stopped at the Four Corners Monument where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah meet. Besides the monument itself, I recall buying some form of petrified rock and a rope tie with a shiny rock at the end, which looking back was one of those head scratching purchases as both were not seen after we got home.
Anyway, back to present day, the trip was more of a "never seen the area" than anything so rented a bicycle and pedaled this bicycle-friendly city; in addition to a few soda pops along the way. The University of Utah was a short pedal from downtown with a bit of a climb but nothing this old man couldn't handle. A beautiful campus setting on the base of the mountains.
City Creek Canyon north of the Capitol building was probably my favorite area. A gradual, but not too crazy of a climb up to a road leading down to one of the more beautiful visuals back down into the city.
As far as the church the city is known for, their office building size matched that of the big banks in town. I'll probably get struck down after writing this but how many departments does a church need in a 30 floor building? I haven't attended mass in quite some time but as I recall, every week we give thanks, sing some songs, stand up/sit down/stand up/sit down/knee/stand up/sit down, pass the hat around so the father can run the place, occasionally buy everyone some doughnuts/coffee, and to always treat each other well. What more is there?

U of U campus - sweating out that 63 score on your accounting test waiting/hoping for an adjusted grade curve is not as bad with this view coming out of class |
