Fish On

I finally got to see last night in Auburn Hills of what the fuss was all about. Samantha Fish this, Samantha Fish that; Keith M. could not stop throwing the accolades out for this rocker from Kansas City. Now I know. The five of us are still in awe this morning. The lady can pluck like I've never seen plucking before. To top it off, we had front row seats so I spent most of my time focusing on those magic fingers as she was making those strings bend; and bend some more! Her drummer and bass player were strong as well. If she comes through the area again, I will definitely make a point to see her.

In Search of Winter

We all hate driving in snow but winter around metro Detroit feels a bit odd without that cold H2O covering our lawns and stretching our backs during the shoveling process. Well, six of us headed north this weekend to once again see the stuff that co-workers cry about during their drive into work (I hate people that cry about their drive to work; nobody cares!).
The location was Cadillac, specifically Caberfae Peaks. The five downhill racers took to the hills while I took to the forest for some cross-country ski adventures; I more or less had the trail to myself. While I consider the other local cross-country ski location, the Big M, to be better, the MacKenzie Trail through Manistee National Forest wasn't too bad. It was well marked and quite scenic but the only downgrade I give it is I was the "groomer" on a few of the loops meaning the trail hadn't been touched since the last time someone skied through.
A gold star to Rob S. (AKA Clark W. Griswold) for arranging the tailgate lunch of all tailgate lunches. Up went the portable canopy, on went the grill with some tasty deer sausage and on went the envy of everyone walking by this awesome setup.
A nice soul cleansing weekend with friends.

Celebrity Sister

So we set the scene for this morning. The idiot box is on with some 7 AM surfing going on.  Some Seinfeld reruns, infomercial after infomercial, the same weather forecast (cold as shi* is the forecast), replays of the NFL games, Tiny Tunes, etc... A commercial comes up on one of the shows so over to channel 2 the surfboard goes. Who do we see on the box? That person looks like my sister. It is my sister! Star of stage and screen, talking up some bicycle riding in the city. She has been on before with her public relations career so she isn't a rookie in the interview process. She did great in this one as well.
A gold star Sis!

Way Back Machine Visit to Distracted Driving

The day was December 22, 2015, this writer was pedaling the sidewalk on 12 Mile, headed en route home on a very mild winter evening. While passing the mall area, I came across an area where cars were coming out onto 12 Mile; four lanes, two cars coming, two cars going. I get by the first two incoming lanes with no issues. Next, I make eye contact with the first car in the outgoing lane, the guy sees me and I pedal by. The final pass is where the fun happens. I make eye contact with the vehicle in the last lane and swear for the life of me that he sees me as well. I start to pedal, am directly in front of the vehicle and.....he starts to drive. Down goes Reeves!!!! Pinned under the front portion of the vehicle, I said a few things that came to mind, namely WTF?!?!? I yelled for the guy to quickly back up as my right foot/leg was crammed between his front tire and my bike frame. Thankfully he did as one more foot forward would have been some form of broken limb for me. The guy gets out of his car with a hundred apologies. I gave him some more WTF?!?!? talk. I was in a bit of shock so I can't remember what exactly his alibi was on the brain fart he had. All I know is he had one. I moved my body parts and besides some bruises and body parts that would eventually swell to about three times their size by the time I got home that night, thankfully nothing was broken. With that, I told the guy I would live and let him go on his way after a few more WTF?!?!? comments to him. So there I am tinkering with my bike damage (about $120 worth) so I could pedal home in pain when two good Samaritans (are there 'bad' Samaritans?) jump out of their cars and tell me the guy who hit me left the scene and they had his plate number. I told them that I let the guy go and was okay. They were adamant that they would get the guy and there was no way I was okay. I assured them again that I was okay and off my bloody body with a wobbly back tire (had to remove the back brake cable to pedal) went home. As I start to pedal, I can hear the guy who helped out talking on his phone. He is still calling it in. I was about a mile from home and hear sirens in the distance. That is my ambulance I was guessing. No ambulance for me thank you; just three days of some serious wincing.
This wasn't my first experience of distracted driving though. I may have created the process.
Queue the Way Back Machine to November of 1983 as young, stupid Tim had just turned 16; drivers license time!!!! The day you thought would never come was here!!! I can't believe kids today aren't as giddy to get their license. I thought I would get struck down in some freak way that would prevent me from getting to my 16th birthday. I made it!
My wheels at the time were in the form of a 1976 fire engine red Ford Pinto with a manual transmission. I had no manual transmission experience but we'll get to that part of the story in a bit. My dad, with his big heart, helped this guy from Ortonville who was having some hard luck and needed some cash for his family. He had some car fixing ability so my dad paid him to get the Pinto ready for young, stupid Tim's driving career. The guy put a lot of time in that car and it worked well for the short time I had it. Yes, it was a short career for me with that Pinto.
corner where I totaled my Pinto in 1983
It was a gray Saturday morning and we had basketball practice up at the high school. I'm driving home with Al C. in the passenger seat. My clutch/accelerator combination was a bit ugly but improving every day. So there we were at the stop light at Milford/Livingston Rd. I'm in the left turn lane on Milford headed onto Livingston. The light turns green and young, stupid Tim is overly focused on getting that clutch/accelerator combination so he wouldn't stall or get that embarrassing jump the car can do when you have too much of one while still pushing the other. Concentrating on the oncoming traffic would have been a better choice as I nailed the clutch/accelerator combination but put us right in front of a car coming straight through. Wham!!!!  Into the passenger side (sorry Al) the vehicle hit us. No injuries to report but the short life of my Pinto regime was over. It was totaled. The police arrive to get the details and write up the report. "Driver's license please," the officer asks me. From my wallet I pull out my temporary license, a piece of paper. He and the guy I hit could only shake their heads. Thankfully the other driver didn't push for charges so my driving record wasn't hit. Nice way to start a driving career though, eh?
Don't get distracted.

'Tis The Season for the Leechbombs!

The hardest working band (at doing Tom Petty covers) in SE Michigan converged at Roger's basement studio yesterday to see what the band has been working on since they last played about a year ago. Well....did I mention they like to play Tom Petty covers? Yes, there were a few (read: many) of those along with some Stones, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel (mean harmonica playing by this writer), Zeppelin and some more Petty for good measure.
Keep on rocking in 2016 Bombs!

St. Louis - Tight spaces, bad football, and supporting the local product

Five forty-somethings had the great idea back before we knew our football team blew that St. Louis would be an ideal road trip location to see a game. No regrets on the city choice but oh how the Lions play so bad. We'll get to the game in a bit but we need to rewind back to Friday when Al, Doke, Jim and myself met up with Jerry coming in from North Carolina. Our hotel was two blocks from the stadium with the arch right out our window. A great location. While tired from the drive, we were too exited to stop for the night so after a snack at the Saint Louis Brewhouse, we ventured over to BallPark Village; a mix of bars just outside of Busch Stadium. Some great people watching there and I'm sure people were looking at us 'yuck yucks' the same.
Saturday came and it was going to be tourist time; Budweiser and the arch. I remember as a kid of about five years old being absolutely terrified to stand next to the arch. I thought for sure that thing was going to fall. Needless to say, I didn't go up in it as a kid. This year was going to be different; thrill seeking Tim would not be afraid of the arch. The guys with me weren't interested in going up but I was ready....until I saw the pods you go up in (pictured at the bottom of this post). They even ask you when you buy the ticket if you are claustrophobic and capable of walking 90 stairs. I was picturing a larger train/elevator taking you up but these were little boxes. I have jumped out of an airplane but closed spaces are not my cup of tea. I was next in line but it was not to be for me. Exit, stage left.
No worries. I caught up to the guys and off we walked on this bone chilling 70+ degree December day. After a few cold beverages, we walk by this bar called "Bobby's" with a hockey logo on it. A girl walking out said 'Bobby' was inside. Nothing against the Bobby who played for the Blues and owned the bar but we were expecting someone else. Nice guy though. Funny thing is we were watching the hockey game later that night and there is Bobby on the television getting some kind of award.
The walk then moved on to a city museum which was one like I have never seen before. It was kind of a mix of abstract art but also funky slides for the kids (and yours truly) to hang on. Some of the pictures below are from that. I'm normally not a museum fan but this one was pretty cool.
Back to tourist mode, we hailed a cab for the brewery tour. Five large men in a cab is not a pretty sight. I had about a quarter butt cheek to sit. Thankfully the ride wasn't too long, however, we felt like the Griswolds when we got to the brewery as they told us the last tour of the day just left 10 minutes earlier. Waaa, waaa..... The gift shop was pretty cool and surprise, they had beer for sale so all was not lost. The cab back to the city wasn't needed as the brewery has a shuttle bus we found that takes you back to BallPark Village where you can buy more of their beer. They aren't stupid.
Us old farts somehow had enough energy to head out for a meal that evening, an awesome place just out of the downtown called The Shaved Duck. There was an hour wait but we weren't in any hurry so we killed time with a beverage outside; the temperature still near 70 that evening. The wait was worth it as my chicken (surprise) was A#1.
After all of this, and I've left out quite a bit, we still had a football game to see Sunday morning! We went with a different look on the tailgate scene this year and a great choice it was. Again, the stadium was only two blocks away so we weren't going to be driving anywhere. The night before, we inquired to the pub that was attached to our hotel if bloody mary's would be available prior to the game. "Open at 7 AM" she said so there was our tailgate. It rained all day so Tigin's Irish Pub was an ideal home base. Others had the same idea as by the time 10 AM rolled around, all the characters were in the house, even Elvis the Ram (pictured below). There were quite a few Lion fans in the house. We like torture I guess. I felt for the Ram fans though. While we are consistently inconsistent in the D, at least our franchise isn't being dangled to Los Angeles as St. Louis is right now. Most of the fans we spoke to more or less said good riddance. Some still miss the football Cardinals that moved out to Arizona. Two teams leaving town. Not right. It's not like the Rams stadium is an out of date antique. Besides the lack of crowd, I enjoyed the experience.

After the Lion loss, we somehow found an appetite again after stuffing ourselves at the game. We went back to the Saint Louis Brewhouse and put a few more pounds on.
We ate; we ate a lot this weekend. No regrets.
St. Louis, thanks for the hospitality, the beverages and the grub.
